I'm Back

Since I've been on last I've gotten 4 more chickens, (All hens :P) have gotten rid of our three pigs, and have sold 2 roosters, and butchered 1. So here's the summary 4 out of the 8 chickens we got were roosters, so we sold Sophie and my baby boy August :'(  we ended up keeping Mumba, the momma's boy, we bought 4 other hens from the "Chicken Guy", Luke, then our last rooster Tweety was being mean to the hens so dad butchered him. On the bright side we got all 4 hens from our new batch, so no more sad departures, their names are Ceiga, which is Spanish for blind woman she's a polish hen so her feathers block her eyes, Augusta female August, Bertha, and Shorty.

Another Day at The Crow's

Well, we got the chicken run attached to the hen house! Yeah no more moving chicks from house to run!!! They can do it on their own now.

Finally a picture of all 8 together.

It rained yesterday and the pig pen is a MESS! I haven't been able to get in there to clean it our and it smells so bad. Every time it stops raining I have to give it a day or two to dry but then we get more rain. Tomorrow is the day to get it done.

Last week a cat showed up. We named him, Max. He is VERY friendly to us humans. He doesn't care for my dogs, he really doesn't like the pigs, our (indoor) cat, Mitzy HATES him, but he doesn't mind his backyard buddies the chickens. So I posted on a couple sites for a found cat. If no one claims him then I will keep him as an out door cat. He's a very sweet boy.

Until next time.

Baby Pigs Arrived & Chickens Getting Big!

We got the new baby pigs on May 18th. These ones this year are tiny. So tiny we had to double up on the paneling on the pig pen.
Sausage (Black one I call her baby because she is so small), Brat (Red & Black) & Pig Woman my 9 year old son named her (Black & White, I call her Pig)

The Chickens have grown a lot since the last time Sheila posted. Still don't know if there is males and females. Last night my "Chicken Guy" Luke came over and told me my pretty lady is definitely not a lady. :(
Here is me and Mumba. He doesn't hold still very well.

Here are some more of the ladies (maybe) lol.

Baby Chickens

Hi it's me Sheila my mom told me I needed to keep up with this so here I go.Today 7 of the chicks are 1 week & 1 day old one of them is 1 week old. The babies have started to get their real feathers (not down) on a majority of their wings so we can sorta tell what color they might be. During all of this my dad is complaining about the smell!!! So I'll try and post every night about our chicks and (when the time comes) pigs, but NO promises.

That's all for now type ya later

Veronica is out! This morning we (the dogs and I) went in to feed water and check on the pigs and Porkers was smelling Veronica and she snapped at her and got her in the nose. Veronica is done with morning chores!

Yesterday Sheila and I went out and she finally put to pet her pig, Porkers. Before this Sheila told me that Porkers could go right to the butcher. She didn't like her pig. Now she's not as mean to her.

When the kids got home yesterday I guess they both were hand feeding their pigs. Bacon really doesn't care how he gets food as long as he can reach it.

So far so good. It's more work around here but I think the pay off will be worth it.

Last Friday we went to the Co-op on 169 in Long siding and the lady that helped us eased our minds and had a lot of great info! Kudos to Amanda and THANK YOU! I'll be going back and seeing her again! Maybe pick her brain for more info. ;)

They are here!

Well, we did it!

Went and got 2 pigs from Rush City and brought them home. A male, Bacon and female, Porkers. They kids are uneasy about the whole process so we will see how the summer goes and wither they will eat pork ever again.

Our Dogs love them but the pigs aren't too sure of them. today they had our Black lab, Veronica, Cornered and she decided she really didn't want to play with them any more. lol

So far they haven't destroyed too much. Today I had to wrestle with the female she had two ticks on her and she was a strong little bugger!

Every morning I have gotten up and went to check on them and feed them Jaz, our white lab, and Veronica have to go in and check on them.

Getting Started

Getting started...

My husband Shane and I are going to raise our own pigs and chickens!

We've got half of the "Pig Pen" built. Once that is done I told him we start on the chicken coop.

WAY tooo many questions and finding some answers but still not sure where to get the pigs? If our 16' x 20' Pen is big enough for two pigs? What do I feed them?

Well, back to the internet highway for more learning! This is more work that building the pen!
